Match One Race Report…Heaton Park, Saturday 12th October.  Steve Green reports.

Emilia Platt fought out a classic duel with Emily Haggard Kearney before easing to victory at Heaton Park.Under sunny autumnal skies, the newly crowned National U20 champion Platt and Haggard Kearney, who has a 5k road best of 15.24 this year, swapped the lead through the sweeping downhills and sharp inclines of this 3-lap race.
Salford Harrier Platt managed to move clear mid-way through the final lap to enjoy an eight second margin by the tape over the Warriors athlete. A further 400m or so down Mollie Williams moved clear of Lucy Armitage to gain third
place. Platt also led Salford Harriers to the team win ahead of Sale Harriers. T

The senior men’s race was an equally competitive affair. Trafford’s Finley Proffitt was always in the mix in a group, with Harry Wakefield, with Sale’s Harriers’ Arlo Ludewick and Nicholas Barry also involved. Proffitt took charge at the beginning of the third and final large circuit, coming up the final hill, as the inclement weather started to worsen and extended his lead over Ludewick to fifteen seconds by the tape. Wakefield came in next, a further 100m in arrears, ahead of Barry and first U20 George Noble (5th) both helping Sale to a narrow team win over Salford.

Warrington’s Imogen Warton came home around 300m clear of Isobel Hill in the U17 event, with Constance Jenneson, third. Liam Johnson of St Helen’s enjoyed around 80m of daylight from Pio Aron, who was a few metres clear of Trafford team-mate Emmas Finlay Dobson.

Isla Yorke of Warriors came home 60m ahead of Beatrix Soper, in the U15 girls’ race, with her fellow Sale Harrier, a further eight seconds down in third. Macclesfield Harrier Jake Ireland broke the tape ten seconds to the good from
Adrian White, who was over a minute clear of Michael Phelan.

Warrior’s Eve Beddow pulled clear of Esme Cameron in the latter stages of the U13 race, with Bleu Bailey taking third spot. Fellow Warrior and U13 Owen Oswick enjoyed a 70m winning margin over Loxley Schofield with Harry Redhead
in third.

Wirral’s Sophie McCready took U11 girls’ honours, with Jessica Davidson, second and Emilia Gandy, third. Salford’s Isaac Taylor Unitt was the top U11 boy, with Alex Farrell second and Hamish Heginbotham taking third place.

Despite the clash with the Manchester half- marathon the following day, numbers were still strong across the races.
We would like to thank our sponsors, Run NorthWest, and Worsley Physio and City of Manchester Athletics for their continued support and as always, all the officials and volunteers.
